A Plan for Plymouth
The World War Two Blitz of Plymouth left the City heavily damaged. Despite the vast destruction and loss of life Plymouth City Council looked to the future. Plymouth would be rebuilt it would be re-imagined, redesigned and reconstructed. Resurgam - 'I shall rise again'.
On 1 September 1941 Plymouth City Council decided to embark on a redevelopment plan. That plan, 'A Plan for Plymouth' was prepared by Sir Patrick Abercrombie, a renowned and leading town planner of the day. Abercrombie’s plan was seen as visionary, lending mostly to the designs of New Delhi, Canberra, Paris, and Washington DC. The centre of Plymouth and many of it's surrounding areas were completely rebuilt in the late 1940's and early 1950's, all spawned from Abercrombie's bold vision for the new city. The reconstruction work actually commenced in 1947.
